Episode 1: Who are you? The Elevator Pitch

The Elevator Pitch

This is Kim Bultsma from A Cup of Content, and I have a question:

Who are you?

I work with many businesses who want so desperately to get into the social media space, on a blog, in a video—and yet when I ask them that one question, they stumble. You see, the problem is as business owners we all know who we want to be known as, but we forget that our potential customers don’t know that. They aren’t looking for us as “experiential designers” or “creative strategists”. They are looking for “local branding company” or “content marketing.” So the pain point businesses have is that they are not thinking like their customers. And it’s hurting them online.

So what we as business owners need to do is perfect our elevator pitches.

First, identify your goal.

I want people to know that I am a content marketer, so I could say, “Content a la mode provides content marketing to businesses.” But that’s not very exciting or interesting.

The second thing I need to do is explain my value proposition.

Why is what I do valuable to others? So I added this: “I provide social media strategy and execution, email marketing, and blogging services that focus on SEO to help businesses get found online with content that’s just right for their business.”

Finally, ask for engagement.

The last part of my elevator pitch involves asking a question to get others engaged. What are these businesses doing online that is helping them get found? So I put it together:

“Hi! I’m Kim Bultsma with Content a la mode, and we provide content strategy for social media, email marketing, blogging, and websites with an SEO focus to help businesses like yours get found online with content that’s just right for you. What kind of content is your business sharing online?”

At this point, the other person can answer and you can begin having a conversation about a simple idea they could implement today. So I gave a freebie away—but I have also established myself as a thought leader in this industry, and they will be asking for my card and setting up a meeting—over a cup of coffee and content.
